Maintaining and Cleaning

Maintenance and cleaning

With regular care, our felt will look flawless even after years and will give you so much pleasure for a long time.

Depending on the severity of the stress, on the surface of the felt can be form smaller Nodules, textile fibers and Dirt. This textile deposit on the surface of the felt is called pilling. Pilling is a natural phenomenon that affects almost every type of textile. Fibers of the felt interlock with other fibers of e.g. jeans, which leads to knot formation due to friction when sitting. The sooner you remove the nodules, the less work it is to restore the felt to its original state.

1. Remove light contamination with the lint roller or adhesive tape

Regularly usw a lint roller over the felt to remove lint, dust and the first small knots. Loose fibers will stick to the roller. If you don't have a lint roller handy, you can also use adhesive tape. Stick it on the felt and pull it off again until the affected areas are clean. This procedure is also suitable for other textiles to remove dust and hair.

2. Shave tight pilling

For heavier soiling and advanced pilling, we recommend using a simple disposable razor or if at hand, an electric wool lint shaver. We recommend using an electric lint shaver as it gives better results and can also be used for clothing.

Otherwise, it is best to use a new razor with a fresh blade, without soap strips. Place the felt on a flat surface and shave with moderate pressure over the affected areas, removing excess fibers and shaving the surface smooth. Even if the felt is heavily pilled, it can be restored to almost its original state in this way.

If you are not afraid to invest in a lint shaver, you can find devices in stores from about 15 to 35 euros. We recommend a wired device, because the battery-powered lose too quickly in performance and has not the power it needs. (We have made good experiences with the COMELEC QP 7200 and Xiaomi Mijia for about 20.00 euros, which is also used by us).

3. Wash in the washing machine

Sometimes it may be necessary to wash the felt due to contamination. Unlike wool felt, our felt can be washed in the washing machine without any problems. Be sure to use a wool or gentle cycle with a maximum of 800 turns at a maximum of 40 degrees. We do not recommend washing more than 2-3 pieces together. Please note: The felt is not suitable for tumble drying!

4. Shower off in the bath or shower

Unfortunately, washing in the washing machine is not possible for large bench cushions and wall pads. In this case, we recommend hot showering them. You do not need to worry, the shower spray is ideal for this. If you have a jet function, set the shower to the strongest level. Hold the cushion upright in the shower or bathtub and shower it off from above so that the dirty water can run off downwards. After the cushion is cleaned, place it upright in a suitable place so that the remaining water can drain off.

5. Iron out wrinkles and creases

If the felt has developed creases or unsightly folds from packing (large bench pads and wall cushions) or washing, these can be easily ironed out with a wet damp cloth.

Keep the following in mind: Set the iron to the highest setting and always use a wet damp cloth between the iron and the felt.

Moisten a standard tea towel with water and wring it out slightly so that it is noticeably damp. The wetter the cloth, the easier it is to remove kinks from the felt. It may be necessary to dampen the cloth several times and iron it over the felt again until a crease can be completely ironed out.
